Šarmantni i karizmatični Jane ima neslavnu prošlost televizijskog vidovnjaka te je stekao negativni publicitet nakon što je razotkriven kao varalica. Iako je priznao kako nema paranormalne, već samo mentalne sposobnosti, jedina koja i dalje sumnja u njega je narednica CBI-a Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney). Iako je nepredvidljiv i poznat po zaobilaženju protokola, njegovi kolege, agenti Kendall Cho (Tim Kang) i Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) te novakinja Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti), dive se njegovom šarmu i učinkovitosti u rješavanju slučajeva. No Jane skriva još jednu mračnu tajnu iz svoje prošlosti. Naime, nekoliko godina prije početka same radnje Jane je izgubio suprugu i kćer koje je ubio okrutni serijski ubojica poznat kao „Crveni John" a koji će se na njegovom putu naći i u budućnosti.
